Summer Skin

We are back and it’s Summer in NYC. Time for day parties, rooftops, cookouts, pool and beach days - season.  Coco, cherry, mango - ice cups, in front the building vibes.

We outside!  With sunscreen though!

What does this mean for Beautiis?

  • Prolonged hours in the sun without the proper protection can and will lead to skin damage. Immediate or long term, UV rays and free radicals cause skin to become dehydrated, burnt and start to age us prematurely. Oh and let’s not forget about a common disease called Skin Cancer.

  • Although common, in Black people when the disease is identified it is in the later stages of development and can prove fatal. Read more here

So here are some tips to keep your skin sickening and protected this summer…

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

  • If you do nothing please stay hydrated. Yes! drink a lot of water, eat foods that have a  high water concentration but remember water  has to travel to all main organs before it reaches the skin. You can double your intake, yes but you may not see a difference.

  • If your skin can not retain water - then it may be time to consider incorporating ingredients that will help. Start looking for skincare products that have humectants - water loving ingredients that draw moisture into the top layer of skin. Ingredients like Aloe, hyaluronic acid, honey, glycerin, etc.

Protect and prevent…

  • Aside from me telling you to apply and reapply SPF for sun protection, you also need to protect your skin from, well, the environment aka free-radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that steal electrons from stable molecules, causing them to become unstable. Smoke, smog, certain drugs and pesticides and UV rays  are all free radicals. So no, we can not escape them, especially living in a major city. However we can make sure we are keeping them in check.

  • Antioxidants are the molecules that keep free radicals in check. Vitamin C, E, Green Tea, polyphenols and CoQ10 to name a few, are great ingredients to include in your skincare routine.

When looking to incorporate these ingredients into your routine look for them in serums.

  • Serums that contain a humectant + antioxidant = the perfect two for one product.

  • Serums penetrate the skin deeper and ingredients are higher in percentage.
