How To Treat Oily Skin

My oily skin peeps, you’re stripping your skin too much.  And not hydrating it enough.

Whenever someone tells me they have oily skin, they tell me of all the products they are using to detoxify and mattify their skin - however, when I ask if they are hydrating and moisturizing, they almost immediately yell out no (or occasionally absolutely not) and I laugh because they do not even know the half.

  • Stop stripping your skin - over cleansing, using too many detoxifying and mattifying products will strip skin of its natural oils. Because skin is being excessively stripped it goes into SOS mode, producing excess oil, to protect itself because it can not produce water.

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Your oil levels are high because your hydration levels are low. Incorporating hydrating serums

  • Cleanse with a gel or foaming cleanser - if you are acne prone use one with salicylic acid.

  • Tone - exfoliating toner - acne prone or not, glycolic regulate sebum and helps refine pores

  • Hydrating serum

  • Acne treatment - if needed

  • SPF

  • Mattifying moisturizer

  • Do not attempt to extract excess sebum or blemishes yourself - see your esthetician once a month for maintenance and extractions

  • Exfoliate once to twice a week no more, over exfoliation can lead to damaged skin barrier and excess sebum production (remember skin is trying to protect itself by producing more oil)
